With Matlacha on one side, the Caloosahatchee River on the other, and over 400 miles of canals, there’s a lot to explore in Cape Coral. Here are five of the best outdoor adventures this Southwest Florida city has to offer.
Dive Off the Lee County Coast
Boasting more than 20 artificial reefs that serve as prime habitat for marine life of all sorts, the waters off Lee County’s coastline are filled with amazing sights for divers to explore. Made of recycled materials like old rail cars, automobiles, pieces of bridges and barges, old boats, and, well, pretty much anything else large and nontoxic you can think of, these reefs are a magnet for sea creatures. Whether you’re a seasoned diver or you’ve been itching to give it a shot, you’ll have a blast here, and there are a number of diving centers in the area that can help guide you through the ranks and attain the certifications you need to go all in on your underwater explorations.
Fishing
Whatever type of fishing adventure you’re looking for, you’ll find it in Cape Coral. Killer deep sea fishing, freshwater fishing in the area’s lakes, canals, and rivers – you name it. Flanked by the Caloosahatchee River and the Matlacha Pass Aquatic Preserve, this section of Southwest Florida is home to fish of all types. Some of the inland highlights include redfish, trout, tarpon, and bass, while a few sought-after offshore catches include grouper, snapper, kingfish, wahoo, and mahi.
Paddle the Great Calusa Blueway
Go big and paddle the Great Calusa Blueway. Cape Coral sits right in the middle of this 190-mile canoe and kayak trail system that routes through coastal and inland waters off the Gulf Coast. There’s big adventure to be had on this meandering waterway. Amazing bird-watching. Beautiful mangroves. So much wildlife to spot. If you’re really lucky, you might even see a dolphin or a manatee.
Take a Dip in a Swimming Hole
This one requires a bit of a drive, but it’s worth the 60-mile journey north to the Warm Mineral Springs swimming hole near North Port. This naturally occurring mineral spring maintains a temperature of 85 degrees year-round. Even better, the mineral-rich water is said to have positive effects on your health! If you’re looking for an adventure of the relaxing variety, a trip to Warm Mineral Springs is the way to go.
Break Out the Golf Clubs
South Florida is home to countless world-class golf courses where you can play year-round. Bust your clubs out of storage and hit up the highlights, including Coral Oaks Golf Course, Palmetto-Pine Country Club, Hunters Run Country Club, and Cape Royal Golf Club.
